DID RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISM WIPE OUT THE GREAT LIBRARY OF ALEXANDRIA IN THE FIFTH CENTURY?

WHAT IF TECHNOLOGY DID THE SAME TO LIBRARIES AND UNIVERSITIES IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY?

In 1995, signs and portents convinced the Guardians of Wisdom and Knowledge of a new danger to the evolution of human intelligence. Two librarians will meet in the past to embark on a rescue mission, a hero’s journey.

Twentieth century historiographer and academic librarian John Newton has his own problems. The sudden rise of digital technology has spawned an aggressive corporation called Digital World. Their plan to digitize all hard copy books and journals may be a threat to the existence of his university library, even the university itself. Added to that, budget cuts are announced. No wonder he’s seeing things.

John goes back in time and meets Yarrl, the cousin of Hypatia who’s head of the most famous library of all time. Worried, she sends them into the desert to find and secure storage space for scrolls and codices. They meet the Desert Fathers, including Arsenius the Great who helps them learn about desert spirituality. Their lives will never again be the same.

Chapter 19

Earth Avatars

“Punky, you said I’ll have an avatar. I don’t understand. The only avatars I’m familiar with are Unix utility software programs that perform specific subroutines in a computer operating system. Can you tell me more about your avatars?” I was fascinated by all this.

“Right now John, you’re in spirit form only. But your travel requires certain protocols, so you’ll be given an avatar, a body that underlies the biological cloak and houses your spirit. It’s the avatar that permits you to go to the past and move about as you choose.

“Like your Unix utility program, the avatar I’m preparing for your use in The Commons will help you complete your assignment. It’s a biological encasement of an energy field, much like your present body in the material world. Throughout history many such avatars have been sent on a great variety of specific missions to the earth plane, what we call Sub-Real.

“Avatars have facilitated major advances in human consciousness and helped humans make new connections, such as the discovery that fire could be controlled. Some deliver a profound insight or new knowledge to an individual or a large group. They can appear to be as ordinary as someone you meet on the street, or they can have something extra. You must be aware of the avatars known as Einstein and Jesus.”

“Jesus?” I wasn’t sure what he meant.

“Yes, an avatar may be the catalyst of change for one person or a few; for the advancement of a large group or even the whole world. Such changes are frequent on a smaller scale in the sciences and arts, for example.” I thought Punky really meant it could happen anywhere to anyone at any time.

“The avatar Jesus came to infuse humanity with more compassion and civility which helped promote knowledge and experiences that led to many things, including the beginning of what you now call Western Civilization. The Romans needed that influence, but didn’t always make the best use of it. The early Church was sometimes intolerant of those who didn’t share their beliefs.” This was a new way for me to look at history and maybe understand it better.

“When an individual or a group gains great power on the earth plane, it’s often a tragedy for many others. It’s hard to believe humans can be so vicious. When that happens an avatar is sometimes sent to Sub-Real to help straighten things out; Joan of Arc was such an avatar who helped her people and gave them hope.”

“I don’t understand,” I was shocked. “Both Joan and Jesus suffered horrible deaths for the good they brought to so many people while they lived on earth. Why would that be?”

“Sometimes the death of such a figure helps their contemporaries and those who come after to better understand life.” Punky continued. “Not all avatars have to endure that kind of suffering. There have also been many avatars who lived long, happy lives and gave humanity important gifts that continue to inspire long after their deaths. Sometimes people realize and appreciate uplifting information when received, sometimes they don’t understand or accept it for many generations.”

“Humans have come through terrible times, and there will always be more.” He had a lot to share and I was fascinated. “Whenever an avatar has been called to help right a wrong, advance civilization or give someone a boost, I’m glad to help.

“Some avatars suffer mental anguish or pain that’s kept hidden.” Punky answered my questions as his fingers kept working. “In the end, the more an avatar suffers, the greater the reward. Jesus suffered in public, others endure great pain or anguish in private. Many karma points may be earned after the avatar has completed a mission and is back in Real. You will also get karma points after your time in Egypt.”

“Me? But I’m not from what you call Real.”

“No you’re not, at least not right now. But you will soon go into The Commons area of Real because your expertise is needed to help people who are in a desperate situation; and you may also take care of your own unfinished business from that time.

“As a Sub-Real or earth-plane avatar you’ll be able to transcend all restrictions on time travel.”

“But Punky, what if I do something that would wipe out my own life?” I thought of that time-travel paradox we’ve all heard about; if you went back in time and killed your own grandfather you wouldn’t exist.

“That won't be a problem, there are built-in safeguards to prevent that. I’ve done this a bazillion times throughout history without any problems. Well, except for one thing; but that got cleared up pretty quick.”

“May I ask what that was?” Nosy, I spoke before thinking.

“Sure, yeah, that one was a real challenge. It involved the avatar Jesus. As the time approached for his crucifixion he got cold feet, so to speak, and wanted to back out. Who could blame him, it was a horrible assignment. I would never have done it, not for all the karma in Real. If he had backed out, it would have caused major ripples through time ever after.

“In those days, the One wanted to send humanity a powerful message for all time for the betterment of humankind. Jesus faltered under great and terrible pressures but knew he had to continue his journey as planned and did so. It’s unfortunate that throughout history there are many who didn’t get it and have never understood the true meaning of his message. That's just my opinion. Jesus got the most karmic points ever; but he was worn down something terrible. That was the word going around at the time.”

I thought how hard and cruel human existence can be; and of all the avatar Jesus had given to mankind for all time. Exempli gratia, the Sermon on the Mount, an incredibly radiant gift that’s uplifted so many people ever since.

“Indeed, taking on an avatar role was never intended to be easy. People who have the hope, love and grit to do it are all special.” Punky’s voice was subdued.

“What do you mean?”

“Well, as I said, the real purpose of human existence is to grow and in the process learn how...” A long pause followed. “Just a minute, I’m getting a message.” He stopped, made a couple of adjustments and turned back to me.

“Now you must be ready; the door will open in a few nans.”

“Wait! What happened to my body on earth?”

“OK, then you have to go.” He took a deep breath. “Right now your former biological cloak is on its way to the hospital. It will stay there until your mission in The Commons is finished. Then you’ll be reunited.”

That's just great, I thought, Now I’ll have hospital and doctor bills. “Don't worry about the hospital and doctor bills. That’s taken care of. And be aware you might experience some time distortion when you return. It could seem like weeks go by where you’re going; but only be a few minutes back home. It’s even possible you could be back in time for lunch.

“So relax and take your time; do whatever you need to do.”

“Do what I need to do? What exactly will I have to do?” I was a little on edge. “How will I get back?” A flash of fear shot through me. What if I got stuck somewhere in time?

“Just put on your ruby red slippers and click your heels twice.” Punky sent me a look and laughed.

“Give me a break, I don’t have any ruby red slippers.” What a clown. I was miffed, but had to admit it was funny and I quit feeling scared. Maybe Dorothy was a time traveler.

“Sorry about that, I couldn’t resist.” Punky laughed again.

“Here’s my for real answer. I work with mathematical probabilities and as your time in Egypt is supposed to be short, I’ll keep the channel open and monitor your visit. The timing of your return will be determined by mathematics. Everything depends on when your task is completed.”

I wondered how that works.

“Don't worry about it,” Punky continued to read my thoughts.
